Who knew? I'm a southerner, so I grew up with my towels dried on the clothesline in the backyard. Matter of fact in those days, a clothes dryer was a wooden rack that was kept in the corner of my little brother's room for wet laundry when it was raining.
I never considered that this might be one of the weightier problems facing mankind until recently when I mentioned something to a friend about hanging my towels out in 30 mile an hour winds. The direct response was "is your dryer broken"? Uh, no. I can remember the number of times I've dried my bath towels in the dryer in my lifetime. Okay, so I'm getting on up there and I might exaggarate, or heaven forbid, forget a time or two, but you get the point. Mother Nature and the sun complete the washing process in my household. Aside from the fact that the linen closet smells like the fresh air and sunshine, there's nothing like the feel of a nice crunchy towel buffing the water off after a good shower.
In the early years of our marriage my husband learned to live with crunchy towels. I really don't remember any complaints, but then a complaint would have undoubtedly meant, wash it yourself if you want it machine dried. Come to think of it, in those days it would have meant sitting in the laundromat even longer.
This issue popped back up again last week when I replied to a friend's e-mail about her husband wanting a new bath towel. Something soft. Something cushy. When I responded that I liked mine dried on the line she said that she did too. So I started a little unscientific poll. Bath towel; dried in the clothes dryer or on the clothes line in the fresh air. Among the poll I've conducted so far, nearly all the women prefer an air dried towel. The men without exception, and I admit I didn't ask my husband, prefer towels dried soft and fluffy from the dryer. And listen, the washer just stopped and the winds are beginning to really pick up. Gotta grab my jacket and go hang out those towels.....
